Hot Potato

Have you ever wanted to share the final episode of The Batchelor or discuss the NBA playoffs with a bunch of people who are into  the event as you?  Well you can on app called Hot Potato that let’s you socialize and share your thoughts around live events.  While you can already do that on Twitter and Facebook, the differentiator is that Hot Potato will “curate” the chatter, so you will end up talking to both your friends and people that you don’t know who are interested in the same event.  The Williamsburg based start-up was founded in 2009 by Justin Shaffer, an 8 year veteran of Major League Baseball Advanced Media group.  While at MLB, Shaffer established strong ties with the media community that he’s been able to leverage for strategic partnerships around his social-based start-up.  He recently announced a partnership with AT&T to engage users around the March Madness event.  Shaffer raised $1.4 million in funding led by RRE and angel investors like Chris Dixon and Zach Klein from the Founders Collective.  While Manhattan and Dumbo area of Brooklyn have no shortage of start-ups, Hot Potato is the first Williamsburg based start to get over $1 million in funding.  Shaffer and his team hope to pave the way for a new ecosystem of entrepreneurs in the area.
